Importance of Oil Pressure Gauge

An oil pressure gauge is one of the most important indicators when it comes to keeping track of a car engines life. The main role played by engine oil is to encase the mechanical parts in a film of oil to keep them from rubbing against each other. Mechanical parts rubbing against each other often result in quick wear and tear of them resulting in the decrease of the life of the car engine. This happens when we run the car without taking into account the loss of oil pressure being caused. Oil pressure needs to be high enough to cover the mechanical parts in a film of oil lubrication.

This is where we get to see the importance of a gauge indicator. The indicator keeps a tab on the overall well being of the engine. It is capable of detecting engine problems before hand there by acting as a warning system. This warning system is extremely important if we wish to keep away expensive wears and tears the car may undergo.

Oil Pressure Gauge

Types of Gauges and their functions:

Gauges are mainly of two types

  • Electrical Gauge
  • Mechanical Gauge.

Electrical Gauge:

 An electrical gauge runs on an electrical circuit supply which is supplied from many wires of the dashboard. The current generated is passed through a wire wound coil connected to the needle pivot. This generates a magnetic field and moves the needle. However the reach of the needle across the scale depends on amount of current flowing. Resistance created is also dependent on the oil pressure. As oil enters the screwed sensor of the engine, it pushes against a diaphragm and the resistance created moves the wiper. Varying oil pressure moves the needle giving us the reading. All electrical gauges are illuminated easy to integrate and are less bulky.

Mechanical Gauge:

The oil enters the gauge from a copper or plastic pipe which is connected to the gauge from the back by a connector. A coiled tube called the bulb is attached to the outer casing of the gauge and its other end is connected to the bottom end of the needle mounted on the pivot. The oil from the pipe enters the bulb at the same pressure and this pressure straightens the bulb. The straightening of the bulb in turn moves the needle to show the reading. Though mechanical gauges are trustworthy they are not used commonly due to the fact that a minor glitch in the pipes can lead to oil leaks.

While many cars don’t have an oil pressure gauge it is always wise to invest in one. This helps to keep away any serious damage and avoid unnecessary maintenance cost.
